The CITF-funded CHILD Cohort COVID-19 Study regularly adds rapid results to its webpage. Information about the study’s participants is also included. The COVID part of their study is one-year long and is exploring: infections rates in children, why some children infected with the virus become seriously ill while others do not; risk factors for infection; and how physical distancing and school and business closures are affecting mental health and wellbeing in all members of the family.

The CHILD Cohort Study tracks 3,500 families in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario, who have been followed since before their children were born between 2008 and 2010. In 2018-2020 (just before the pandemic), children in the study provided detailed health data and blood samples. This gave the study a unique opportunity to study how children’s pre-pandemic health and immune status influences the risk and outcome of coronavirus infection.
